"description": "A freight-car air brake (Westinghouse automatic air brake), one wheel's worth at full size: brake pipe and angle cock, control valve, auxiliary reservoir, a 10 in brake cylinder, a 3:1 cylinder lever, brake rod and beam, and a cast-iron shoe on a 33 in wheel. Measured in Orchard's physics playground: at 50 psi the cylinder pushes 17.5 kN (1.7 kN of it into the release spring), the shoe closes its 10 mm gap and stops the wheel from 10 mph in 5.8 s, 0.87 m/s² at the rail. That is a 48 kN shoe force at μ 0.3, within 2% of the lever math. FEA of the cylinder lever (A36, 120×30 mm): 97.6 MPa peak, safety factor 2.56; fatigue (Goodman) about 1.9 to 2.7. Modeled, not measured: the orange disc stands in for one eighth of a loaded 130 t car; the cylinder is a pressure-limited ram with a 2.5 s pressure build-up (air compressibility and the control valve's logic are not simulated); μ is constant; pins are ideal. One cylinder driving one shoe at 3:1 is a demonstrator ratio: a real car's cylinder feeds eight shoes. Built by Claude (Opus 5.5) in Orchard.",
